Financial advice

Hi, I have a couple of financial related questions. I was diagnosed with a neuroendocrine pancreatic tumour back in July and still haven't received treatment and/or surgery yet. I work for the NHS as an associate practitioner for adolescent mental health. I have been off work with the stress of it all since August. I'm about to go to half pay and worried that if I need surgery I'll be off for a few months and could lose my pay completely. I'm scared for my family anyway, as well as with this financial situation. We're already considered a lower income and on universal credit. Will universal credit top up the loss of my wage?

Also, I am in receipt of PIP due to having a solitary left kidney in stage 3 CKD, do I need to let PIP know of this health change?

Is there any other financial assistance we could seek right now? I have no idea who to ask any of this.

My name is Liz and I am a Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Adviser.

I am so sorry to hear about your diagnosis and the associated stress.  This must be such a tough time for you and your family, and it's understandable that you felt the need to take some time from work.  For your own reference, you may like to take a look at our Work and Cancer web page.  Having cancer may affect your ability to work. This page answers commonly asked questions about cancer and work. This includes your legal rights and sick pay options.

I would imagine you would welcome the opportunity to speak with a specialist adviser to walk through you personal circumstances.  On the Support Line, we have a Money Team that are available from 8am to 6pm every Monday to Friday.  They are available by telephone, on 0808 808 0000 or web chat: perhaps for a first introduction to them, a phone call may enable a deeper level of conversation to understand your situation.  They very much appreciate, on a first call, that you have your in comings and out goings in front of you, as they may talk you through a financial assessment.

for these types of conversations, many people prefer a face to face meeting, if you feel more comfortable to look for your local welfare rights options, you may put your postcode into this Find Local cancer support services to see what support is close to home.

I can appreciate at times such as this, everything can become overwhelming, if you ever feel you would like to talk things through, you are welcome to contact the Support Line from 8am to 8pm on any day, by phone on 0808 808 0000, live web chat, or email; sometimes talking things through can really help.  You will see from the link, we also have Cancer Information Nurses here from 8am to 8pm, should you have medical questions about your cancer.

I wish you all the very best, and please feel you can come to us when you need to.

    Best wishes

    Liz
