Travel Insurance - Lymph Node Question has increased the cost of my insurance.

Aviva has taken over the insurance provider for my Nationwide Flex account.

I usually paid an extra £60 but this year it has increased to £151.

i have had breast cancer three times, my 2nd episode , the cancer had spread to one lymph node. This node was removed and I had chemotherapy . My 3rd episode, apart from the surgery, only required radiotherapy

However, I was asked if the cancer spread to any other part of my body which I answered no. The next question asked the cancer had ever spread to lymph nodes, which I answered yes. My supplement increased from £60 to £151!

The lymph node spread was 8 years ago and to me it seems strange, to be penalised for this from now on.

  • Dear  ,

Thank you for getting in touch. I am sorry to hear that you have had three experiences of breast cancer, and the impact this has had on your premiums for travel insurance. I completely understand your concerns around feeling penalised, especially when several years have passed since the lymph node spread you mention. Now although Macmillan don't deal with insurance and aren’t able to recommend any specific companies, I hope I can provide some information which may help given the circumstances.

Firstly though, I do wonder if you have reached out to your new insurance provider Aviva to discuss your concerns and the timescales that have passed since your lymph node spread? If not, then this may be a good starting place as often insurance companies have underwriters to discuss individual circumstances, or more complex situations.

Please also have a look at the links below which may help should you decide to source alternative insurance cover for travelling:

I also wonder if you’ve ever looked at our Macmillan Online Community Travel Forum? Often people will share details of their insurance experiences which may be of use to you too.

I really hope this information is helpful  . And do remember we are here for emotional support too as we understand the frustration the lasting consequences of cancer can cause so please do get back in touch if you have any questions or need further support.

  • Thank you for your really helpful reply. I did speak to the new insurance provider and highlighted my concerns. No change this year but think  they will reflect on the timeline from lymph node involvement.
