Hi. I am just wanting to ask about financial help for my partners upcoming radiotherapy appointments. He is a blue badge holder and has other medical complaints. IE Cardio miothapy (heart failure)

  • Dear  ,

Thank you for your getting in touch. I'm sorry to hear that your partner is going to be having radiotherapy and that he also has other medical complaints, including cardiomyopathy. I understand the challenges the frequency of radiotherapy appointments can bring, both from a transport and financial point of view so  I’m very glad you have reached out to us here at Macmillan. I hope I can provide some information which may help not only with your query about financial support but perhaps also help with arranging transport too

Firstly, I wonder if you've had a look at our website? This contains a lot of information about getting help with transport to appointments, as well as links to other organisations and NHS schemes such as the Patient Transport Service, known as PTS, which can help with the costs of transport too if your partner is eligible. I have attached these links below in case they may be of help:

    Macmillan  -  Transport

NHS  -  How  to  organise  transport  to  and  from  hospital

    Community  Transport  Association

With regards to financial support, please know that we have our Welfare Rights team who can carry out a benefits check to ensure your partner is receiving the appropriate level of financial support, and the team can also advise about any grants that your partner can apply for too to help with transport costs, such as from Turn2Us. To speak with that service, you can chat to them online by starting a new chat and selecting the option, 'Welfare, Benefits, and Grants’ or you can call our freephone support line 0808 808 00 00 and press option 1 then 2 again to speak to that team. Their opening hours are Monday to Friday 8am– 6pm. It would be helpful for your partner to have details of his income, outgoings and any savings available to help the team do an assessment for him.

I really hope this information is helpful . And please remember we are here for emotional support too as we understand how difficult a situation like this can be so do get back in touch if you have any other questions or need further support.

    Take care,
