Hello my husband was diagnosed with bladder cancer 5 years ago. He is self employed and works in between BCG treatment hospital stays where they have to remove the cancer, regular camera appointments and does not get paid when he has all these appointments. We have tried to claim pip but been denied. We have got in a lot of debt as he looses money constantly and over the 5 years we’ve had loans and trying to pay it all back. We have 3 children I also work 4 days a week but we are struggling financially so much. Is there anything we can apply for to get some help please?

  • Dear  ,

Thank you for your getting in touch. I'm very sorry to hear about the financial difficulties you have experienced following your husband's diagnosis of bladder cancer 5 years ago and that your PIP claim has been denied. I understand how difficult it can be to talk about financial struggles so I'm really glad you've reached out to discuss this. I hope I can provide some information which may help you check if you are entitled to any financial support and also get some guidance regarding the debt you are trying to pay back too.

Please know that we have our Welfare Rights team here at Macmillan who can carry out a benefits check if there is any financial support that you both may be entitled to. The team can also advise about other organisations you can speak to regarding debt such as Step Change Debt Charity and National Debtline. To speak with that service, you can chat to them online via our live web chat service by starting a new chat and selecting the option, 'Welfare, Benefits, and Grants’ or you can call our freephone support line 0808 808 00 00 and press option 1 then 2 to speak to that team. Their opening hours are Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm. It would be helpful to have details of your income, outgoings and your savings to hand to help the team do an assessment for you when you contact them.

I really hope this information is helpful .  And please know that we are here for emotional support too as we understand how difficult a situation like this can be so do get back in touch if you have any questions or need further support.

    Take care,

    Marie, Information and Support Adviser

Remember you can also speak with the Macmillan Support Line team of experts. Phone free on 0808 808 0000 (7 days a week, 8am-8pm) or by email.
