Hi I had melanoma stage 3a in 2023, im now on surveillance scans etc, also had thyroidectomy due to thyroid  cancer july24 and may have   hypoparathyroidism as calcium dropped after supplements were discontinued now back on supplements, endocrinology appointment  not until December,  also had benign paraovarian cyst removed earlier this year. just wondered if I have rights to reduce my working hours a little and if gp would likely support this.

  • Dear

Thank you for contacting us, my name’s Vicky and I’m a Support Advisor here at Macmillan.  I’m sorry to hear you’ve been through so much in the last few years, it’s understandable that you're thinking about reducing your working time a little.

It’s worth speaking to your GP, they may be able to provide you with any medical evidence to support case or if you have a Cancer Nurse Specialist assigned to you then they may be able to help you too.

Although I can’t give you any direct advice on whether you have any rights on reducing your hours we do have some booklets on Work and cancer and Your rights at work when you are affected by cancer, I’ve put links in for the pdf versions that you can download and read right away, hopefully there’s some information that may help you.

It might also be beneficial for you to speak to The Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS) as they’re the experts in employment issues, they have a helpline 0300 123 1100 that’s open from 8am to 6pm on weekdays and their website has some very useful information too.

I hope this information is of some help to you Miss mole, I also want you to know that we’re here, as a place you can contact privately and confidentially to talk through how you’re feeling and access emotional support. We are here every day of the week from 8 am-8 pm on 0808 808 0000 or via web chat, please do keep in touch as much as needed.

    Kindest regards,

    Vicky, Information and Support Adviser

Remember you can also speak with the Macmillan Support Line team of experts. Phone free on 0808 808 0000 (7 days a week, 8am-8pm) or by email.
