Hello,

I am looking for some advice regarding my employment. My wife was diagnosed with stage 4 mestatic peritoneum cancer 16 months ago. she is on her 3rd type of cancer treatment after the previous two didn't work. The first treatment (folfox) left her with severe neuropathy in her hands and feet. When she was first diagnosed I reduced my job from 5 to 4 days a week, this has given me more valuable time with her. I would like to again reduce my working week to 3 days, however I changed my job role recently and I don't know what my entitlement is. I work for the NHS, my manager remains the same as my previous role but I am located at a sister hospital with a new job title. Does my manager have to accommodate my wishes within the NHS and find me another role? (my new role does not support a 3 day week due to the nature of the job)

Any advice that you can give me would be great. Thank you for your time.

  • Dear ,

Thank you for your getting in touch. I'm very sorry to hear about your wife’s illness and that she is now on her third type of treatment, It’s understandable that you will want to support her as much as you possibly can, and that this may require making an adjustment to your current working arrangements. I hope I can provide some information that may help you get the support you need with this matter.

Now although we aren't able to offer any advice or guidance on workplace matters here at Macmillan, I wonder if you have looked at our Macmillan website page Your rights at work while caring for someone with cancer? This has a wealth of information, including your legal rights as a working carer. Our booklet Working while caring for someone with cancer may also help.

The following organisations have more information about your right to request flexible working and making a request too:

I really hope this information is helpful   . And please remember we are here for emotional support too as we understand how difficult a situation like this can be so please do get back in touch if you have any questions or need further support.

    Take care,
