The firm I work for are making redundancies which as far as I know they needed 3 to go and offered voluntary redundancies which 3 people have but seem to hope I will as way to get rid of me well that’s how it feels anyway. I feel like I’m being singled out due to my illness from brain tumor as I can’t work the hours my colleagues work I start 3 hours after them as I start at 9 and finish at 5 they work a 12 hour shift. And I’ve been very restricted in my work due to the occupational health report I feel like I’m being singled out because of this I have a brain tumor giving me seizures. Do I have any rights ? I can fall back on anybody know

Thank you for your getting in touch. My name is Liz, and I’m a Cancer Information and Support Adviser here at Macmillan.

I'm very sorry to hear of your diagnosis and the issues you are having with your workplace, I can only imagine how difficult this must be for you. And although we no longer have a work support service here at Macmillan, I do hope I can provide some information that may help you get the relevant advice and support you need with this matter.

Under UK law, cancer is considered a disability, which protects you from discrimination in areas such as employment as such, you may reach out to SCOPE for support.  You may find these links helpful to read prior to reaching out to them;  disability discrimination at work and being managed out of your job.  Being "managed out" is a term used when "employers try to make employees leave or find a way to get rid of them":  I am wondering if this is how you are feeling?

May I ask if you have contacted ACAS, who have a free and confidential helpline for anyone that needs employment advice? If not, then you can call them on 0300 123 1100, they’re open Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm. You can also contact the Equality Advisory and Support Service for guidance too, their contact number is 0808 800 0082 and they are open Monday to Friday, 9am to 7pm and Saturday 10am to 2pm.

You may also want to contact your Workplace Union or Employee Assistance Programme if you have these for advice and support too.

If it may also help, please find below links to booklets and information from our website relating to work and employment rights when you have cancer:

    Macmillan Website –

    Work and cancer

    Cancer and employment rights

    Macmillan booklets –

    Work and cancer – (booklet)

I really hope this information is helpful as you try to navigate these unwelcome complexities of work when going through your illness   And please remember we are here for emotional support too as we understand how difficult a situation like this can be so please do get back in touch if you have any questions or need further support.  You may feel you would like to call us, and you are welcome.  We open from 8am to 8pm every day on 0808 808 0000.

    Take care, and best wishes

    Liz
