Advice about pension following death

Hi there

My father is in his last  last stages of cancer. I'm writing on behalf of my Mum who has been very dependant on him in many ways. My dad says she is due to have half of his pension payments after he dies (both state and private) but what I'd like to know is whether those payments will be stopped completely when dad dies and how long the process will take for her to start receiving payments?

Many thanks

Katie

  • Dear

Thank you for posting on the Macmillan Online Community, my name is Marie and I’m a Support Advisor here at Macmillan. I’m so very sorry to hear that your dad is in the last stages of cancer, I understand how difficult a time this is for you and your family. It’s completely understandable that your dad will want to ensure that your mum is provided for financially after his death, I'm sure it will bring him some comfort knowing this is the case. I hope I can provide some information which may help you get the information you need.

Firstly, our booklet Macmillan – a guide for the end of life has a lot of information which may help you and your parents, as there may be some things you haven't thought about or considered. You can also find out more information about pensions from our website page Macmillan – pensions and cancer.

You ask about both state and private pensions, whether payments will be stopped completely and how long the process takes so I wonder if it may be best to reach out to the Department of Work and Pensions, and to your dad’s private pension providers to discuss this? More information can be found on the Government website Gov.UK - Pensions, and there is also a Pension Service telephone helpline number 0800 731 0469, which is open Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm.

You may also want to reach out to Moneyhelper, which is a free, impartial service in the UK that provides guidance on money and pensions. Their pension helpline number is 0800 011 3797, and they are open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

I really hope this information helps  And please remember that we are here for you and your family during this difficult time - we're here to support you in any way we can so please do reach out whenever you need to.

    Take care,

    Marie S - Macmillan
