I recently got diagnosed with womb cancer, I am a full time home carer and my husband works full time. I am really struggling with my working hours at the moment and was wondering if I would be entitled to any benefits or any help. If I go on the sick I am only entitled to ssp and that isn't enough to live on

  • Hi

I am sorry to hear about your womb cancer diagnosis. I can appreciate it must be such a difficult time for you at the moment with you also working full time. It may be helpful to reduce your working hours.

We have  great Money Advisers in our Welfare Benefits team here at Macmillan who can take a look at your situation and see if there are any benefits and grants that you might be entitled to.  You can contact them on 0808 808 0000, select option 1 for support and then option 2 for Welfare Rights, they’re available Monday to Friday from 8am to 6pm.  Before you contact them it’s useful to have a note of your finances i.e. money into the household and money out, they’ll need this to complete the assessment.

It is also worth speaking to ACAS before you make any work decisions, you can discuss your situation with them and make sure that it’s the right thing for you, sometimes there are other options for you. It is important to get the right information and advice before you do anything. Their helpline number is 0300 123 1100, they’re open Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm.
