Hi. I’m on palliative care. Cancer has spread to several parts of body.
im having to be rehoused as my current home is unsuitable.
I’ve been offered a property by my housing. I’m unable to work. The expenses of a removal van and having to buy new household appliances, carpets, curtains etc etc are worrying me. I can’t take my cooker I have with me as it’s built in. Is there any financial support I can get from any charities please

  • Hi

Thank you for contacting us, my name’s Vicky and I’m a Support Advisor here at Macmillan.  I’m so sorry to hear of your situation, with everything you have going on I imagine moving home is the last thing you need, it can be so stressful can’t it but hopefully once you get settled in it will make life easier for you.

You mentioned being offered a property by local housing, if that’s an association or council there may be help available from them for furnishings and appliances, if you haven’t already it may be worth checking.  You can also speak to your cancer/palliative team too, they may have local information on help and support.

With regards to other sources of help, there is a great organization called Turn2us who have good information on this including a grants search function where you can put in some details and see what may be available to you, I’ve put a link in for you to take a look.

We also have a Welfare Team here at Macmillan, it might be worth you speaking to them too, they can take a look at your situation and see if there are any other benefits and grants that you might be entitled to.  You can contact them on 0808 808 0000, select option 1 for support and then option 2 for Welfare Rights, they’re available Monday to Friday from 8am to 6pm.  Before you contact them it’s useful to have a note of your finances i.e. money into the household and money out, they’ll need this to complete the assessment.

You’ll find below links to a couple of our booklets, there’s a lot of information in them that may be of help to you and there’s other useful links in them too.  You can open the pdf versions by clicking on the links.

Finally, please know that the Macmillan Support Line is here for you too, as a place you can contact privately and confidentially to talk through how you’re feeling and access emotional support. We are here every day of the week from 8 am-8 pm on 0808 808 0000 or via web chat. Do keep in touch as much as needed, we don’t want you to feel you have to cope with this on your own.

    Kindest regards,

    Vicky, Information and Support Adviser
