My name is Liz and I am a Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Advisor.

I am so sorry to hear that you have bladder cancer, I can only imagine that this has been such a tough time for you.  As you are thinking of moving to Spain, perhaps you don't have a support network around you in the UK: please feel that, before, or after you leave you can keep in touch with us here at Macmillan.  This is a link to our online community with international support options, you may also wish to web chat with us, which if course will be a free service over the internet, should you wish to live in Spain.

You mention the process of finding out the information you need is confusing, and I am afraid, there is a lot to consider.  I can give you some research options, but appreciate I am adding a lot for you to think about.

Regarding the process of moving, you may like to start your research by reaching out to the Spanish Embassy in London.  They will have a wealth of knowledge regarding relocating to their country.

you haven't mentioned your treatment position. I am wondering if you are planning to travel prior to treatment, or after?  Whichever you choose, you will also need to consider registering with a Healthcare Team (which the Embassy may advise you about).  If you are planning medical treatment in Spain it's important to understand how it works and discussing this with your GP is a good idea: you will need translated copies of your medical notes. Of course, traveling with cancer comes with lots to consider, including travelling with medication and insurance.  This link to Cancer Research UK has a wealth of information, indeed a phone call with them may be helpful.

Regarding exploring insurance options, for the trip itself, and once you are in Spain, you may like to reach out to BIBA their team has a wealth of knowledge, and the phone number is at the bottom of the page.

I am going to pause there for a moment, as I appreciate this is a lot to think about, and you can always come back to us.

I wish you all the very best with your plans

  • Thank you so much for the message , regarding treatment I think I am going to stay in the UK for the treatment. Hopefully if it goes well then move out there , saying that if I need further treatment I would consider moving out there as the weather and diet can help massively when going through treatment.
