Hello

any advice on telling work of your diagnosis and need to take time off for treatment.

  • Hello Greine and thank you for contacting the Online Community.

The following is taken from our publication Work and Cancer which I’m sure you’ll find helpful.

“You might worry about telling your employer about the cancer or treatment. You may be afraid that they will not support you, or you may worry they will dismiss you or make you redundant. You do not have to tell your employer you have cancer or are having cancer treatment, but it may help. Many people find that their employers are supportive. If this is not your experience, we have more information about resolving problems at work.

It is important to know about your rights at work when talking to your employer. You can find more information in our booklet Your rights at work when you are affected by cancer.”

Our Work and Cancer booklet has information about work and cancer, including how cancer and its treatments can affect your ability to work. It covers employment rights and coping with the effects of treatment at work, for example, tiredness, as well as providing tips on talking about cancer in the workplace. There is also information on not going back to work and discrimination. It also has a list of useful organisations that can give you further guidance on your rights at work such as ACAS and LRA if you’re in Northern Ireland.

How are you just now Greine? Are you due to have any surgery or treatment? We’d be more than happy to talk things through with you.

We have a team of cancer specialist nurses here on the support line if you have any clinical questions you’d like to ask about your diagnosis.

Our team of Money Advisers can perform a benefit check for you and give guidance and information about what kind of financial support might be available. They will need information about your income, outgoings and any savings/investments you might have.

We’re also here for your emotional support Greine. Cancer can bring up all sorts of feelings and it can be helpful to talk about these to try and process what’s happening.

You can call in on 0808 808 00 00 (7 days a week, 8am – 8pm), web chat or continue to email if you’d prefer, and you can check our website to see what local support there is.
