My partner has been diagnosed with terminal cancer and given a prognosis of months to short years to live. She was originally my carer as I suffer with chronic back and neck pain, depression and anxiety, and undiagnosed ADHD and PTSD. As I have taken on the role caring for her, she has applied for PIP and had the oncology team send off SP1 form. In the meantime, she has cancelled her carers allowance, meaning we have had to live on £50 a week the last 2 weeks child benefit. We receive Universal Credit, but that is not due now till 15th June. I have had to spend money on fuel and parking to her hospital appointments and emergencies whilst still trying to feed my 4 children. Is there a grant I can apply for to live a little more comfortably. I don't want more than I'm entitled to, I am just upset and angry at having to struggle in these hard times.

  • Hi

My name’s Vicky and I’m a Support Advisor here at Macmillan. I’m so very sorry to hear of your partner’s diagnosis, I can only imagine what you and your family are going through right now and financial stress is the last thing you both need right now I expect.

Here at Macmillan we have a Welfare Rights Team that can look at your financial situation and give you some advice on any additional benefits that you both may be entitled to, both as a person living with cancer and as a carer too, it might be worth having a chat with them, they are available on our helpline by calling 0808 808 0000 and choosing options 1 and 2. They are also available through email and online chat, the team are available 5 days a week 8am-6pm.

We also have a booklet called Help with the cost of cancer that may be useful for you too, I’ve put a link in to the online version for you to have a look at.

In addition to our services KarmerYT there is an organisation called Money Helper  that has some good advice with regards to finances.

Finally, KarmerYT, I want you to know that the Macmillan Support Line is here for you, as a place you can contact privately and confidentially to talk through how you’re feeling and access emotional support, We are here every day of the week from 8am to 8pm on 0808 808 0000 or via web chat, please do keep in touch as much as needed.

    Kindest regards,

    Vicky, Information and Support Adviser
