Hi. Looking for some advise please. I’ve been diagnosed with melanoma (early stage hopefully). I had my WLE 2 weeks ago, and employer happy for me to bring my med3 on my return. Was then signed off for 2 more weeks due to pain from WLE, submitted this cert a week ago two 2 management persons with no response until yesterday. In the space of 7 mins yesterday I had an email querying my return to work as manager said “I have you returning tomorrow is that not the case”, I then received a text asking me to ring and then a phone call and then finally another email notifying me that she was attempting to recall the 1st email.
today I received an email advising me that I am not entitled to full pay as per my contract which is fine. There was a line saying that I was having a “full day off” for a hospital appointment (the appointment is a results appointment and is over 2hr drive away so I didn’t want to commit to returning on same day) and could I provide my clinic letter for my HR file.
is this a reasonable request? I genuinely dont know, I have all the proof if it is, but the email has left me feeling both dramatic for wanting a full day off and also not believed. Also is the amount of time I have been contacted over 2 days reasonable when I am off work due to my diagnosis? Perhaps I am being over sensitive. Sorry it is so long, and thank you.

  • Dear ,

Thank you for your getting in touch. My name is Marie, and I’m a Cancer Information and Support Adviser here at Macmillan.

I'm very sorry to hear of your diagnosis and the issues you are having with your workplace, I can only imagine how difficult this must be for you. And although we no longer have a work support service here at Macmillan, I do hope I can provide some information that may help you get the relevant advice and support you need with this matter.

Firstly, may I ask if you have contacted ACAS, who have a free and confidential helpline for anyone that needs employment advice? If not, then you can call them on 0300 123 1100, they’re open Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm. You can also contact the Equality Advisory and Support Service for guidance too, their contact number is 0808 800 0082 and they are open Monday to Friday, 9am to 7pm and Saturday 10am to 2pm.

You may also want to contact your Workplace Union or Employee Assistance Programme if you have these for advice and support too.

If it may also help, please find below links to booklets and information from our website relating to work and employment rights when you have cancer:
