Can my brother get married at home?

Hi there

My brother is currently in hospice, but is being sent home hopefully early next week. He and his long term partner would like to get married, but at home if possible, as he wouldn't be able to travel anywhere.

One of his friends is a licensed celebrant so could marry them, and we could all be with them at home.

Is this possible? It would need to be quick too. I have emailed the council, (Brighton and Hove) but haven't heard anything as yet.

Yours hopefully

Henda

  • Hi

My name’s Vicky and I’m a Support Advisor here are Macmillan.  I am so very sorry to hear about your brother’s condition and I can understand how important it must be for you all to see his wish to get married granted.

As far as I’m aware, it is possible to get married in special circumstances, at short notice and at home if the person is terminally ill and housebound Henda.  There are likely certain criteria that must be adhered to and may require confirmation from a doctor of your brother’s circumstances but that would all be explained on application.  You will need to contact the local registry office in the area where your brother lives, they can discuss the circumstances and requirements with you and then apply for a special licence if everything is in order.

You can also contact your local Citizens Advice Bureau for further information and advice.

I hope this information is of some help to you, please know that we’re here if you would like to talk this through further or if there are any other questions we can help you with.  We’re here for your emotional support too, Henda, as a confidential place where you can talk through how you’re feeling, this must be an incredibly difficult time for you all and we’re here for you, for as long as you need us.

    Kindest regards,

    Vicky, Information and Support Adviser
