Paying for external carers from carers allowance?

I need some advice.

My sister (76) has been diagnosed with stage 4 lung, liver & bone cancer with a prognosis of weeks to live. Being in bed at home, and losing weight, she gets pains where she sits/lays. My niece who cares for her gets carers allowance but is struggling to cope 24 hours a day.

Today, a hospice nurse came in to see my sister and the pains that she is in. Her statement was that if she needed more help, then she needed to pay for external nursing care from her £70 per week carers allowance?????  Is this correct?

I am so sorry to hear about your sister, this must be such a difficult time for you all.

I can completely understand that your niece is struggling to cope, at times such as this, life can become overwhelming.

In the first instance, perhaps I can offer some support options for your niece.  Your niece may wish to reach out to her local Adult Social Services to ask for a Carers Assessment.   A successful assessment may offer her support for her well being, perhaps even some respite, so she can take a break.  There is further information on the link below.

Another option for additional emotional support and advice for you all is a Marie Curie Companion.  This could be regular telephone support, through this very tough time.   This service is open to anyone over the age of 18 who is affected by terminal illness, whether you are living with a terminal illness yourself, you're caring for someone, you're a family member, or you're close to someone who is living with the terminal illness.  The link below will guide you.

Regarding your query about extra support for your sister and the financial element of it, a good place to start is her local Adult Social Services.  Your sisters GP may help by making a referral, or, with her consent, you may approach them directly for help.  What you are asking for is a Needs Assessment.  The assessment will look at your sister's living situation, both in terms of any carers visiting to help, equipment to support her, and perhaps support with meals etc. The link below has more information, or, her local Council can help.

As I mentioned Adult Social Services will support you with a financial conversation, but, in addition, you may like to speak to our Money Team here at the Macmillan Support Line.  They work week days from 8am to 6pm on 0808 808 0000.  This team can perform a benefit check for your sister and give guidance and information about what kind of financial support might be available. They will need information about your sisters income, outgoings and any savings/investments she might have.   should you feel, you would like to make this call on your sisters behalf, you are very welcome to chat with them.

I am mindful to not overwhelm you with information, as you can always post again, or phone if you wish. If you would like to speak with us on the phone, our lines are open from Monday to Sunday, 8am to 8pm. Our free* phone number is 0808 808 00 00.
If there is anything we may be able to help with, please let us know.

I wish you and your family all the very best, and please keep in touch if you need additional help.
