Hello ,

My husband has a terminal cancer diagnosis but at the moment is fit for work  and work's full time mainly from home as he previously done before diagnosis (due to diagnosis he cannot drive but this doesn't effect his role too greatly) However the firm is currently has a slight downturn in work and I would like to know his rights if he was asked to reduce his hours or take redundancy, his work has currently been supportive with allowing time off for treatment, I'm not sure if my husband has told them his diagnosis is terminal- is that something they should know? He has been with the company nearly 20yrs so financially it would effect us both.

  • Hello

Thank you for getting in touch with us. How are you both doing? I can see you are looking for some guidance about your husband’s work, but we are also here if either of you need a space to talk things through.

You’d be welcome to get in touch with us on our freephone support line 0808 808 00 00 or our online webchat service. Both are open 8am -8pm seven days a week. We will provide you with emotional support and a space to talk things through and express how you are feeling.

We also have a team of cancer information nurses if you need any medical guidance, and a money advice service who can provide guidance about any financial help that may be needed. There might also be some local face to face support which you can find here.

In terms of work, and any guidance we can offer, I would encourage you to have a look at the information on our website about cancer and employment rights. It might also be useful for your husband to look at our guidance about talking with his employer.

To perhaps help understand his rights at work, and to help answer some of the questions you have mentioned Slh, I would encourage you to contact an organisation such as ACAS. They can provide free guidance and advice about it.

Please do stay in touch with us Slh.
