After surgery phone call

After having surgery to remove colon cancer, we’ve had a phone call from someone who says they are from the NHS, and would like to ask questions about mental health after surgery, and would like to set up a video link so we could be assessed. It was a private number, and we are suspicious. Is this a normal procedure?

  • Dear
Thank you for contacting Macmillan Cancer Support.  I'm so sorry to hear that you've been going through surgery for colon cancer.  How is your recovery going?

Calls from NHS are often from private numbers but to put your mind at ease and check things out, please contact your team at the hospital to find out if this is something you can expect following your surgery.

It's important that you have the information about what this is, and what to expect, to allow you to decide if this is something you would like to take part in or not.

Did the person who contacted you leave some details so you can follow up with them if you have questions?
If none of those options provide any further information you could contact the local PALS team - What is PALS (Patient Advice and Liaison Service)? - NHS.  You can find out about your local team here if you are in England Find patient advice and liaison services (PALS) - NHS.  If you are in Scotland it would be PASS | Patient Advice and Support Service Scotland or in Northern Ireland it would be NIDirect.
I hope you can find out further information and decide if this is something that is part of your after surgery care.
    Yvonne, Information and Support Adviser
