I went to hospital outpatients yesterday and understood everything at the time.
By the time I got home I had forgotten a lot of what was said. My son was unable to accompany me this time.

I think I want to have a chaperone so that this does not happen again. How should I go about finding one?

  • Hello

Thank you for getting in touch with us. It’s understandable that when visiting hospital for an appointment, you might forget much of the information you have been told. It is quite common for this to happen. It is a good idea to have someone else with you such as a family member, but we understand this is not always possible.

Some hospitals might be able to provide you with a chaperone, it’s best to check this with your hospital team before your next visit. If there is a Macmillan Information and Support Centre attached to the hospital, they might be able to help provide someone to meet you and accompany you. To find out if there is a centre at the hospital, and if so, how to contact them, have a look at the link here.

In the meantime, if you have any medical related questions about anything you have been told, or just need more guidance, you can get in touch with us on our freephone support line 0808 808 00 00 or our online webchat service and select the option to speak with one of our Cancer Information Nurses. We are available to speak with in both those ways from 8am-8pm seven days a week.

Please do stay in touch with us about this.
