My friend is nearly pension age, has a heart condition and just diagnosed with untreatable cancer. He is an unpaid carer for his wife with  dementia with o claims a pension. He has been trying to get a social worker allocated with no response. He somehow needs to arrange 24/7 live-in care for his wife. Currently a carer paid for by direct payments  comes in for a few hours most days. He is not taking his prognosis at all well. He is in deep shock. He has no insurance or funeral plan and no savings. He needs help and support he is not getting. They have no family in area

  • Hello

Thank you for reaching out to us here at Macmillan.

I’m sorry to hear about your friend's health, caring for a loved one can be hard and now with his untreatable cancer, this must be such a difficult time for them. It is good that they have you around to help them.

You mention he has been trying to get a social worker, with no response. Has he contacted this local authority about this? It would be worth looking at the following social services support - Needs Assessment through Social Services.

Do they have any support for his wife’s dementia at all? Dementia UK provides some great support including their Admiral nurses, and they have a helpline 0800 888 6678 you can call to gain further information about how they can support someone with Dementia.

receiving a cancer diagnosis can be very hard to cope with, so, understandably, he may not be taking his prognosis well. We are here to support him, we provide a place to talk through how he is feeling, helping him find ways to cope with his health, we have helpline nurses for any clinical information and a Money team too. We’re here 7 days a week 8am-8pm he can call our helpline on 0808 808 0000, or through our Online chat and email services.

I would like to link some further guidance and information, I hope this will be useful for your friend.
