For the last 5 years my husband has been my carer full time.

2 months ago he was diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer he's been given 12mths plus

He felt he should contact carers to tell them but he hasn't heard anything back. So we are wondering whether he's still allowed to claim carers or not.

We don't want to commit fraud so we just want to know if we are still able to claim carers or not

  • Hello Dawnywotsit and thank you for contacting the Online Community.

We have information on our website about Carers Allowance and you’d be welcome to speak to our Welfare Rights team about this. They’d also be able to carry out a full benefit check to see if there’s any other financial support you might be eligible for. You're welcome to submit a web chat choosing the option 'Welfare Benefits & Grants' or you can call in on 0808 808 00 00 choosing options 1, 2 and 2. They will need information about your income, outgoings and any savings/investments you might have.

I’m sorry to hear what you and your husband are going through just now Dawnywotsit, how do you feel you’re both managing? We have a team of cancer specialist nurses here on the support line if you have any clinical questions you’d like to ask about your husband’s diagnosis, and we can speak to you about what care and support might be available.

We’re also here for your emotional support of course. A loved one being diagnosed with cancer can bring up all sorts of feelings and it can be helpful to talk about these to try and process what’s happening.

    Take care.

    Alex, Information and Support Adviser
