My name is Jess. I’m a Cancer Information and Support Adviser. First of all, I’m so sorry to hear of what you are going through at the moment. I can appreciate this may feel like a very difficult and challenging time. I’m really glad you’ve asked this question, as it’s certainly something I’d be able to discuss further.

First, you may wish to explore whether Marie Curie are able to help. In some areas in the UK they offer an overnight care and support service. This is accessible through a referral from a healthcare professional, so it would be something the hospital can help to arrange. You would need to speak with the hospital staff directly to see if this is feasible.

Also, overnight care can be provided by private care companies or social services. Again, to arrange this you would need to speak with your dad’s hospital team who can then make the appropriate referral and get this into place.

I’d like to mention that we have a team of Cancer Information Nurses here on the Support Line  . They have a wealth of specialist knowledge and clinical expertise in this area. They can talk through the options for end of life care, as well as what you might expect to see during this time. It might help for you to feel a little more prepared in this way, so you’d be more than welcome to get in touch with them to discuss things further. You can call the nurses on 0808 808 00 00 selecting option 1, then option 3. Lines are open 8am-8pm seven days a week. Alternatively you can use our Online Chat (‘Question for the nurses’) or email them.

How are you coping through this  ? Do you have support around you? If ever you feel you need a listening ear, or any further information, you’re most welcome to reach out and have a chat with us. You can get in touch on the same number as above, selecting option 1 then option 1. We’re here seven days a week from 8am-8pm.

    Do take care,

    Jess
