Card for use in Restaurant Etc

Could you tell me if it is possible to get some kind of card to take with us into a Cafe or Restaurant if we want to eat out.

My husband has been treated for Mouth Cancer under his tongue and as a result of the Radiotheraphy has no Saliva in his mouth so all of his meals have to be smothered in Gravy, Sauce or Cream etc.

We thought that we may be able to take extra liquid with us for him to add to any meal he orders but wondered if it would be possible to have some kind of printed card to explain his problem.

  • Hello, my name is Jess. I’m a Cancer Information and Support Adviser.

Thank you for your question . There are a couple of suggestions I could make for you to consider.

Have you been able to speak with your husband’s cancer team about this request? They may be able to provide you with something directly from them, or point you in the direction of someone who can. It’s also important they are aware of this particular symptom, as they might be able to offer further medical support or management.

It might also be worth getting in touch with Mouth Cancer Foundation. As they specialise in providing help and support for these specific types of cancer, they may be able to give you further expert information.

You’d be welcome to speak with one of our Cancer Information Nurses here on the Support Line too. They can discuss this particular symptom and talk through management tips. You can call us on 0808 808 00 00 (option 1 then option 3), or email us, or use our Online Chat. We’re available 8am-8pm seven days a week.

You might also like to have a look at our Groups on the Online Community – we have various different forums such as cancer experience, cancer types and an exclusive forum for carers. The Head and Neck cancer forum might be of particular use to you.

How are you getting on otherwise ?

    Take care
    Jess

  • Hi Jess

We have mentioned it to the Speach therapist at my Husbands last review, she did say that if we could not find an alternative she could write him some form of letter that he could take with us so this may be the way we will have to go.

Thanks for your help, he is coping very well otherwise and is improving slowly.
