We have a life insurance policy, we took it out in 2007. It was for death only., but there is a clause about terminal illness. The policy ends in May this year.
My husband is stage 4 lung cancer with deposits in shoulder, adrenal gland and lymph nodes.

I spoke with Mc Millan nurse today and she suggested I get onto them right away. I spoke with the company and they say they can’t pay for terminal illness unless it’s 18 months before the end date of the policy.

my husband does not get sick pay from work, he drew £48 last week and £56 this week. We have approx 6k in saving so are fortunate to have a little to fall back on. The possible payout from this policy would have made such a difference.

is there anything we can do or is this normal practice. It seems very unfair.

Thank you very much for your post. I’m sorry to hear about your husband’s diagnosis and subsequent financial concerns.

Unfortunately, it is common for Life Insurance policies with a Terminal Illness Clause to have an exclusion period where they won’t pay out in the last 12-18 months of the policy’s term. With this is mind, it’s worth considering the timeline of your husband’s diagnosis in comparison to the policy’s exclusion period.

I understand it’s a concerning time if your husband doesn’t receive any sick pay so it may be a good idea to get in touch with the Financial Guidance team to see how we can help. As a team we cover topics such as:

    • pensions and retirement options
    • questions about insurance policies
    • mortgages and money management
    • arranging wills and trusts to protect your family
    • general financial planning questions.

And you can get in touch with us by phone on 0808 808 0000 and select option 1, then 2 and then 1 and our lines are open from 8am – 6pm Monday to Friday. Alternatively you can speak to us on webchat here.

Further to the Financial Guidance team, we also have a team of Welfare Rights and Benefits Advisors who can look into any benefit or grant entitlements. Again they can be contacted by phone on 0808 808 0000 and selecting option 1, then 2 and then 2 again or alternatively by webchat here.
