Sis in law terminal with breast cancer, in hospice and I don’t know how to help my brother financially and where I should start as sis in law has always managed all finances, bank accounts etc, she wants me to help my brother, what can I put in place?

  • Hi  ,

Thanks for getting in touch. I’m so sorry to hear about your Sister-in-Law’s terminal diagnosis and concerns with supporting your brother’s finances.

I think it would be a good idea to have a more in-depth conversation with our Financial Guidance Team. Our Financial Guidance Team can offer information and guidance on all aspects of personal finances, and we can talk through what you’ll need to do to help your brother. We can explain things like what your brother will need to do to manage mortgage payments, rent, household bills, and debts.

We also offer guidance on pensions, insurance policies, will writing and estate planning. If you could gather some information on your brother and sister-in-law’s finances like mortgage or rent payments, any pensions or life insurance policies, household bills and any debts and give us a call.

To speak to the Financial Guidance team, call us on 0808 808 000, then select options 1 then 2 then 1 again. Our team are available Monday to Friday 8am – 6pm. Alternatively you can also speak to us on Webchat too by clicking here.

It may also be worthwhile speaking to our Welfare Rights and Benefits advice team. They can check if your brother and sister-in-law are entitled to state benefits and can help to access other financial support, such as one-off grants to help with those extra costs. You can contact them on freephone 0808 808 0000 and they’re available weekdays 8am – 8pm and weekends 9am – 5pm. If you’d prefer you can also contact them via webchat here.

    Yours Sincerely,
