My mum is going through R-CHOP 4th one due this week.

My mum has two large spine tumours which has caused paralysis, eventually diagnosed as HG NHL.

My Dad has Lung cancer and going through immunotherapy.  They both have lived with me for 14 years

I need to make a room downstairs for my mum now, as she may need a wheelchair.

I have a toilet and would need to try adapt and build onto it to make a wet room shower.  Do you know if financial help from the Authorities is available for this?

They are both on basic pension but my house is bought and I work full time.  It is the house I have lived in raising my 3 kids as single parent for past 15 years.

Just a bit lost at the moment, was also looking at trying to get a bungalow but very confused at the moment with it all

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thank you

  • Hello  ,

Thanks for your enquiry. I’m sorry to hear about your parents’ diagnosis.

To discuss what financial support is available, I’d like you to speak to our Welfare Rights Team. They’ll be able to do a full benefit check to let you know everything you and your parents are entitled to. You can speak to them on freephone 0808 808 0000 or on webchat here and they’re available Monday – Friday 8am – 8pm and weekends 9am – 5pm. When you speak to them, they’ll need some information about household income, savings and outgoings so please have these to hand.

The housing department of your local authority can sometimes help with the cost of  adaptations to your home, so please get in touch with them to enquire about this.

It may also be worth seeing if there is financial support from other charities. You can check this with a service called Turn2us. You can call them directly on: 0808 802 2000, 9.00 am to 5.00 pm, Monday to Friday (excluding bank holidays). Or visit their website here.

    Just to clarify, the Financial Guidance Service can provide information and guidance on all aspects of your personal finances to help you make informed decisions in the following areas;

    • Pensions and retirement options
    • Questions about insurance policies
    • Mortgages and money management
    • Arranging wills and trusts to protect your family
    • General financial planning questions

Our freephone number is 0808 808 0000. The financial guides are available Monday to Friday 8am – 6pm although our lines remain open until 8pm for other services.

You can also talk to us or our Welfare rights team via our webchat service.

    Kind regards.
