The works doctor  has seen me twice and said I should get tier one . But needs to send his findings  to an independent  doctor.   But I was told today from one of my ex bosses its up to the union representative  to get me tier one !!!!!!! I came out the union  last year so have no representative  . Please put my mind ar reast TIA

  • Thanks for your question

I’m sorry to hear about your diagnosis and that you’re getting mixed information from your employer. Normally ill-health retirement tiers are decided by a doctor at Occupational Health. They would request medical information from your medical team to help them determine if you meet the criteria, and what tier you would meet. Some occupational health departments refer to these doctors as independent doctors.

Not all pension schemes take the same approach, but it would be unusual for a union representative to affect the tier someone is awarded as it’s based on health factors and the scheme member’s ability to work.

If it’s possible for you to contact us on the number below, we might be able to comment further once we have a bit more information about your pension scheme. We can also explain options for ill-health retirement and things to consider.

  • Thank you for your quick reply and putting my mind at rest as I thought it was up to doctors.  The Occupational  Health doctor has already said I should get tier 1 but is waiting to hear from my doctor and surgeon  then I'm sure he said it would go to another independent  doctor  .
