Hi, Recently diagnosed with womb cancer and provided it is only in the womb (fingers, toes, leg, everything crossed) they are hoping no further treatment will be needed after doing a hysterectomy, but i dont know what i can claim ect or anything as i will only be off work for 6 weeks , my worry is that i usually earn £400 - £450 a week ( includes overtime) but will only be getting SSP while im off , i dont have any mortage insurance or critical illness cover and i also have a personal loan,

my partner works full time and he receives a salary of £1820 a month which most of the bills go out of his bank but i normally pay £85 a week to him towards the mortgage amd i have aa personal loan with payment of £231 a month, but as i will only be off work for 6 weeks and getting SSP and my partners wages wether ill even be entitled to anything

  • Hi

Thanks for getting in touch with us. I’m sorry to hear about your diagnosis, and I hope you’re keeping as well as you can.

Having a loss of earnings can be a really worrying time and even more so if you’ve been diagnosed with a serious health condition such as cancer.

There are a few different ways that Macmillan can help and support you with your finances.  As part of our Money and Work Team, we have a dedicated group of Welfare Rights Advisers. They can discuss state benefits and can help to access other financial support, such as one-off grants.  They’re not available on Ask An Expert but they can be contacted on freephone 0808 808 0000 and they’re available weekdays 8am – 8pm and weekends 9am – 5pm. If you’d prefer you can also contact them via webchat here by selecting “Chat to us” and then the “Welfare Benefits & Grants” option.

They will ask for some financial details such as household income, amount of any savings, cost of mortgage, council tax and utilities just to see if any other help is available.

We also have our Energy Advice team, who can provide information on the support available to people living with cancer in relation to their energy costs, they can also be contacted on 0808 808 0000 and they’re available Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm.

You may find your mortgage lender can help you with some short-term options, such as reduced payments, a period of paying interest only, or a payment holiday. It’s always worth speaking to them to see if they can be flexible. Ask to speak to their specialist team if they have one, tell them you have a cancer diagnosis and that your income has been badly affected.

We also have a partnership with a debt charity who can give you advice on how to negotiate with your lenders for the personal loan.

If you agree anything with your lender(s), check if there will be any effect on your credit rating. We’d be happy to discuss this with you in more detail, and can share contact information for various lenders with you if we know they have a specialist team.

    Just to make you aware, the Financial Guidance Service can provide information and guidance on all aspects of personal finances to help you make informed decisions in the following areas;

    Pensions and retirement options

    Questions about insurance policies

    Mortgages and money management

Arranging wills and trusts to protect your family

    General financial planning questions

If there is anything from the above list that you would like to discuss in more detail, please reply to this message, or speak to us directly on the same number. To reach the Financial Guidance team just select options 1 then 2 then 1 again. Our team are available Monday to Friday 8am – 6pm.

    I hope this is helpful.

    Best wishes

    Lisa
