I am enquiring for my mum.
She has just had a brain tumour removed which has resulted in limited use of her arm and a change in her mobility.
We have to look into having a down stairs toilet installed and also need to alter the bathroom.
Could you tell me if there is any help or financial support available to help with the cost of these changes.

Thanks for getting in touch. I’m sorry to hear about your mum’s cancer diagnosis.
As part of our Money and Work Team, we have a dedicated group of Welfare Rights Advisers. They can check if your mum is entitled to any state benefits and can help to access other financial support, such as one-off grants. You can contact them on freephone 0808 808 0000 and they’re available weekdays 8am – 8pm and weekends 9am – 5pm. If you’d prefer you can also contact them via webchat here by selecting “Chat to us” and then the “Welfare Benefits & Grants” option.
They will ask you for some financial details such as household income, amount of any savings, cost of rent/mortgage, council tax and utilities just to see if any other help is available.
It’s worth mentioning that sometimes there may be a Welfare Rights Adviser based in the hospital that may be able to assist your mum. If you would like to find out what local support and information is available near you, please visit our website:

Do you know if your mum has any life insurance policies she can claim on? Or perhaps she is yet to access any personal pensions? The Financial Guidance Service can provide information and guidance on these areas of personal finances to help make an informed decision.
