My father in law has terminal cancer. Is there a list of financial things we need to get in order before he becomes too ill to do it himself? Thank you

  • Hello MrsRozza,

    Thanks for getting in touch. I’m so sorry to hear about your father in laws situation but hopefully we can provide some information that will help.

    It will depend on your father in laws circumstances and what is already in place as to what else needs putting in order. I have included the links below to some useful pages regarding what things you may need to consider or discuss.

    You can always speak to our team if you’ve more specific questions. Our freephone number is 0808 808 0000. The financial guides are available Monday to Friday 8am – 6pm. Just select option 1, then 2 then 1 again when you phone to get through to the right team.

    Just to clarify, the Financial Guidance Service can provide information and guidance on all aspects of your father in laws personal finances to help him make informed decisions in the following areas;

    • Pensions and retirement options
    • Questions about insurance policies
    • Mortgages and money management
    • Arranging wills and trusts to protect your family
    • General financial planning questions

    As part of our Money and Work Team, we also have a dedicated group of Welfare Rights Advisers. They can check state benefit entitlements that your father in law may be eligible for and can help to access other financial support, such as one-off grants.

    If this is something that interests you, you will need some financial details such as the household income, amount of any savings, cost of rent/mortgage, council tax and utilities just to see if any other help is available

    You can also talk to us or the welfare rights team via our webchat service.

    Kind regards.
