Is it too late to take out life insurance and critical illness cover?

Hi, I have been having some investigations for what I thought was possible inflammatory bowel disease but they have just taken biopsies and it is now looking highly likely to be bowel cancer. I am 43 and don’t have any life insurance or critical illness cover.
As I still don’t technically have a diagnosis until the biopsy results come back would it be possible to take out either of these policies?

  • Hello

I’m sorry to hear that you’ve got a possible bowel cancer diagnosis – I do hope that the tests are in your favour.

As far as life cover or critical illness cover is concerned, you could make an application but it would be necessary for you to declare that you’re having tests. The insurer will likely ask for the results before they will offer terms.

When buying insurance or making a claim, it’s important to answer the insurer’s questions fully and truthfully, this should reduce the risk of the insurer not paying out if you later make a claim on the policy.

It’s worth thinking about life cover that may already be in place or is accessible through an employer. Some employers offer life insurance as part of an employee benefits package, either as a stand-alone policy or as part of a pension scheme. This cover is generally available without medical checks and is usually a multiple of an employee’s salary.

All the best for your test results, Jessica, and please don’t hesitate to come back to us if you need further support .

    Kind regards.
