Hi

i am 58 and self employed. I have been told I will probably have a year to live and would like to reduce my working hours.  Can I claim my state pension early due to my circumstances?

many thanks

  • Hi ,

Thanks for getting in touch. I’m so sorry to hear about your diagnosis.

To answer your question in short, no, unfortunately with a state pension there is no way to access this early. However, this does not mean you are not entitled to any financial support.

If you have any private or work based pensions, there might be the possibility of accessing these funds as a lump sum or an income. This could be early retirement or on grounds of ill health. There is a pension tracing service to help locate any lost pensions available here. If you find that you do have any other pensions, then get back in touch with the Financial Guidance Team to explore what you can do with them.

Do you have any life insurance policies? If so, there may be similar benefits available to access a pay out early so please give us a call to discuss this.

As part of our Money and Work Team, we also have a dedicated group of Welfare Rights Advisers. They can check if you’re entitled to any state benefits and can help to access other financial support, such as one-off grants. You can contact them on freephone 0808 808 0000 and they’re available weekdays 8am – 8pm and weekends 9am – 5pm. If you’d prefer you can also contact them via webchat here by selecting “Chat to us” and then the “Welfare Benefits & Grants” option.

I hope this answers your question, but if you require any further support please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

    Yours Sincerely,

    Joe
