Hello,

We’ve known for 7 months that my husband has stage 4 Advanced metastatic prostate cancer in his lung and bones and lymph. This was his stage at diagnosis on sept 21.

We have a life insurance policy that I have paid for 7 years which states it will pay out if a terminal diagnosis is given and life expectancy is 6-12months.

We have made no claim at this moment in time. He has a good PSA and is responding to treatment although the pathology is aggressive ductal adenocarcinoma and we have no idea when this will change but it will.

However, out of the blue this morning my husband got a call from AIG life to say they are doing a review. He has put them off until next week. This is the first time in 7 years that they have done this. The policy is indexed linked and it’s for the premium is currently £215 per month. So I am paying a fair amount.

We took out such a high value policy to protect our business and staff should he be unable to work or become ill.

can you advise.. is this normal procedure to do a review? Is there any way they could know if his prognosis without us notifying them yet?

  • Hello

Thank you for your message and I am sorry to hear about your husband’s diagnosis.

It would be very unlikely that AIG would know anything about your husband’s health and prognosis unless you have made them aware or tried to make any sort of claim on the policy.

When a claim takes place there are consent forms that your husband would sign which allows AIG to contact his GP/Oncologist, without these forms they wouldn’t usually have any authority to request medical information.

Generally, an existing life insurance policy is still valid after a cancer diagnosis as long as the health details given on the original application were correct. Any health conditions which develop after the policy has started don’t affect the premium or cover, so don’t need to be disclosed to the insurer, unless it’s a renewable or annual policy.

Could it be possible that you have a 7-year renewable policy? if that’s the case then his new health conditions may be considered, and the premium may increase if cover is to continue. You could look at the policy documents to find out or AIG should be able to advise you of this over the phone. If AIG asks about a change of health situation, it’s important to be open and honest with them.

  • Hi and thank you for your speedy and detailed response. The policy is not a 7 year revising one it’s index linked and increases every year automatically.
I rang AIG today who said it definitely wasn’t them. However, we signed up via a broker called Lifesearch. Apparently some brokers contact people and say they are AIG because they set up the policy through them but actually they want to sell them a supposed better policy.

I don’t know for sure but I’d definitely wasn’t them.

it’s all very odd and my Urology nurse specialist said she hadn’t heard of this before. So I will talk to them myself when they call next week and see if I can work out who they really are.

i will definitely keep you posted.

    kindest regards,

    louli
