Hi,

I have lung cancer and a 3 year old daughter. I ask have life long disabilities of partial hearing and chronic pain/disability from a substantial arm fracture.

I have credit card debt. I wondered if its worth telling my debtors about my cancer as I can pay my debt in the future I hope but I need the interest frozen at the moment. I had my lobe removed 4 weeks ago and I am a single mum of a 3 year old. I have heard that debtors might give you a break but no freeze the interest. Any advice would be good. I want to be able to still have my credit facilities as the future is uncertain. Many thanks

  • Hello

Thank you for your question – sorry to hear that you are now dealing with cancer and are worried about your credit card debt.

Macmillan has been working closely with the banking sector over a number of years and have helped some banks set up Specialist Support Teams to help those living with cancer and other disabilities. We’ve found that those teams can often give people a period of 0% interest but not always. It’s always worth having a chat with their specialist team and tell them you’re dealing with cancer to see if they can offer you any flexibility.

Depending on which lender provides your credit card, the Financial Guides have direct lines to certain Specialist Support Teams so if you were able to speak to us on the phone, we can transfer your call through if you’re comfortable with that. Please note however that we only have this facility with certain lenders.

Have you got any Payment Protection Insurance (PPI) on your credit card? This cover is designed to start paying off your credit card debt in the event of accident, sickness or unemployment after a pre-determined waiting period. If you do have such cover, it’s worth starting a claim.

We’d be happy to discuss this further with you if this would be useful? The Financial Guides are available Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm on 0808 808 0000, Option 1, Option 2, finally Option 1. Or you can speak to us here, or on webchat if that’s easier for you.

    Kind regards.
