We are covered by our Barclays insurance via Aviva for everything except my Secondary Metastatic breast cancer.   We are only planning UK trips this year do I need to get separate travel insurance for this diagnosis for Uk trips?

Thank you

  • Hello ,

Thank you for your message and I am sorry to hear about your diagnosis.

You’re not required to take out a travel insurance policy to cover your cancer if you don’t want to. You would still be able to access NHS facilities throughout the UK if you were in need of medical treatment.

You may wish to consider that you wouldn’t have cover for cancellation costs if you had to cancel your trip due to something happening with the cancer.

If you decide to look for cover you may want to visit our travel insurance blog here to see where others are managing to find suitable cover. Additionally, you could also check the Money Helper website for further insurance companies to consider.

If you do pursue getting cover, it’s always worth speaking to the insurer on the phone, rather than online, to explain the situation and even ask to speak to the underwriter as they may have more flexibility to offer terms. Please note, however, that the cost is likely to be higher than it would be for someone who doesn’t have any health conditions.

It may also be worth speaking with your doctors to see if they are happy to say that you are ‘Fit to Travel’ and if so, whether they’d be prepared to put this in writing if required. If doctors cannot confirm that you are fit to travel, almost certainly any insurer would decline to offer cover.

If you have other concerns relating to your finances, like mortgage payments, claiming on an insurance policy, or worried about debts, please come back to the Financial Guides on here, or on webchat by selecting ‘Chat to us’, or by phoning us on 0808 808 0000.

I hope that we hear back from you soon.

    Take care.
