Hello,

I have just recently been told I have Advanced Bowel cancer.  As yet treatment has not been decided, it is to be confirmed whats happening on 3rd March.  My question relates to my current financial situation.  I am a full-time student in receipt of maintenance loan, doing a QTS course within a school,  as a mature student.    I am currently signed off for 3 weeks by the GP whilst all the tests etc are happening initially.
I have no idea where I stand with being a student financially.  If i cannot carry on my course what can I do financially? I do have life insurance, but this will only become applicable if the prognosis comes in under 12 months.

My next maintenance payment is the start of April.

Many thanks.

  • Hello

Sorry to hear about your situation – it must be such a worrying time for you.

As far as financial help is concerned, there may be some help available to you from State Benefits. For that, you’d need to speak to a benefits adviser. We have a Welfare Rights Team but unfortunately they don’t have a presence on Ask an Expert at the moment. You could speak to them by phone 0808 808 0000 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday or 9am to 5pm at the weekend. Or you could speak to them on webchat by selecting ‘Chat to us’ and selecting the Welfare Benefits and Grants option.

For that call, please have some information about your finances ready, including income from all sources including your student maintenance grant, and your outgoings, such as mortgage/rent, council tax and fuel bills.

There’s some further information on the government website about student loans and what might be available in the event of having to take time away from study because of a serious health condition. To find out more:

I hope this has been helpful, but if you have other concerns relating to finances, like mortgage payments or claiming on an insurance policy for instance, please come back to the Financial Guides on here, or on webchat, or by phoning us on 0808 808 0000.
