Hi all

I work for local government,  housing repairs, my wonderfull company have now decided to halve my sick pay and also to inform me if I am not back at work by September  I will receive no sick pay at all.

  • Hello

Thank you for your message. Sorry to hear about your situation.

If someone is away from work through sickness, the Local Government will  usually pay a period of full salary, followed by a further period of half salary, then down to zero. It sounds like this is what is happening for you and is the standard contractual sick pay arrangement for those who work in Local Government.

I know this will be a worry for you but it would be worth you speaking to a benefits adviser to see if there is any help available to you from the state once your income reduces.

We have a dedicated Welfare Rights Team on the support line and I’d recommend that you speak to them to see what help might be available. Unfortunately, this team is not available here on Ask an Expert but can speak to you by phone 0808 808 0000 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday or 9am to 5pm at the weekend. For that call, please have some information about your finances ready, including income from all sources including state benefits, and outgoings, such as mortgage/rent, council tax and fuel bills.

If you have other concerns relating to your finances, like mortgage payments, claiming on an insurance policy or early access to a pension for example, please come back to the Financial Guides on here, or on webchat by selecting ‘Chat to us’, or by phoning us on 0808 808 0000.

I hope you’re able to sort something out soon so you can focus on your health.

    Take care.

  • Hi

I know that's normally the process. My wife is a senior manager for local government herself and she knows what the process is as some of her staff  have been through it. Normally it is managerial discretion and she knows they normally do not do this to cancer sufferers.  I think it's outrageous and typical of this Solihull council.
