Hi My husband has incurable prostate cancer, he,s self employed and struggling with a very physical job.He thought of applying for universal credit as his hours are reduced with fatigue.We,ve just received a letter from Tax credits saying we,ve been overplayed and owe over a thousand pounds and a month to pay .Our credits stopped a while ago no savings no private pension ,and I get ESA contribution based support group I am so worried what's going to happen we have no money to pay this ,I have heard in certain circumstances this could be written off ,is this a possibility .Many thanks for any information.

Thank you for your message. It sounds like a very worrying time for you both.

This question about tax credits would be best handled by a benefits adviser but unfortunately, our team isn’t available on Ask an Expert at the moment.

I recommend that you call our Welfare Rights Team on 0808 808 0000 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday or 9am to 5pm at the weekend and they should be able to answer your questions. For that call, please have some information about your finances ready, including income from all sources including state benefits, and outgoings, such as mortgage/rent, council tax and fuel bills.
