Raising money and supporting others in my local community

1 minute read time.

I'm Lynda, otherwise known as Winston on the Macmillan site. I was on here almost daily last year, I can't praise this website enough!

I am six months post breast cancer treatment and I have set up a charity called Cancer Support East Kent. We have activities twice a month in the form of coffee afternoons, and "Ladies that Lunch" events.

On Monday 23 September at 11am our friends at the local pub in Hawkinge hosted the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning for Macmillan, with crafts for sale, a raffle, refreshments and fun!   We are also having a Craft and Car Boot Fair in our local Village Hall in Hawkinge on Tuesday 15 October at 2pm, 1pm for stallholders, we have a few stalls left, if anyone is interested.

We support ladies going through treatment, and we have a lot of fun fundraising for the charity, why not join us? Our website is www.baytreeplace.btck.co.uk, all the best girls, and every good luck with your treatment.

Yesterday, a neighbour knocked on my door, and handed me an envelope with money in it, she said "Lynda we had a coffee morning for Macmillan and we raised £127.80, will you please give it to Macmillan for us?” I burst into tears!   Our local pub then sent me an email with an attached flyer showing our coffee morning and how they publicised it - I cried again. And then finally, a lady who has been through cancer treatment sent a picture of her little grandson who doesn't talk much or smile a lot, he had a half smile on his face and in front of himself he held out a piece of paper with a picture of a cat on it which read, "Hello Jamie and Lynda love from Harry." - I burst into tears again!  What an overwhelming day!

This truly all started from the Macmillan community website, as members I’ve met on  this site support me endlessly at Bay Tree Place.

I sometimes go on local radio and talk about my charity and what we do, and I never cease to sing the praises of the Macmillan Community website and how beneficial it was to me.  There were times when it was hard to be "sociable", but I could be sociable online to the girls on the site and it was so good.
