The reason I did the fund raising for Macmillan was because, when I had my eye removed due to cancer in December 2011, they supported me with a grant towards my heating bill, as it was a very cold winter. The Macmillan benefits advisors were also extremely helpful sorting out my benefits.
Then, when I was diagnosed with breast cancer a year to the day later, on 6 December 2012, they were there for me again. Without their support, I am not sure I would still be so upbeat. The benefits team have been there again for me - I would never have managed with all the paperwork involved. With their help, I have been able to concentrate on getting well and coping with all the chemo.
My hair was falling out, so I decided to take control and have my head shaved for charity. I asked my employer if I could do it at work and they agreed. The head shave went ahead at ASDA in Taunton on Monday 4 March. In 2 hours, I had sponsorship for £236, plus a donation from the community life scheme at ASDA for £200. I am still raising funds online at Just Giving, and from the local community when they see that my head is shaved.
Macmillan helped me when I needed it most and I wanted to give back so that others can be helped in the same way. God bless Macmillan.
