Wife of cancer sufferer

1 minute read time.

My husband has recently been diagnosed with Oesophageal cancer. this was picked up during his two yearly scan because he has a condition called A Barretts's Oesophagus. In March of this year, they took four biopsies and one was found to be suspicious, which led to other tests to find out more.  He then had a P.E.T. scan, an Endoscopic Ultrasound and Keyhole surgery. He has a T2 tumour in the Oesophagus. He also has Parkinson's disease and Chronic arthritis. These last two conditions, according to his surgeon, render him unsuitable for the Major surgery needed for a re-construction of the Oesophagus. Because of the inability to move around and leads a pretty sedate lifestyle, his surgeon thinks that the operation would be too risky.  So, three cycles of Chemo, followed by five weeks, of Mon to Fri, of Radiotherapy.

We do have a Macmillan nurse assigned to us, who has been very good at answering any queries we might have.

We have a meeting with an Oncologist next week, and have been told to expect the treatment to start the week after that.

We are unsure as to what would be the right questions to ask the Oncologist.

My husband have been married for nearly 34 years.  He is 73 years old, and I am 66 years old.  We are both retired.

Evening memango,  Won't say welcome because none of us really wants to be here but joining Macmillan is a good start to getting the best info from people who understand and have been in similar situations. Lets try to get you settled in where you and your husband will get the most benefit,  friendly advice and support.

First stop should be the Oesophagus Cancer Group where you can join and post the above as a new discussion as an intro and find the right questions to ask from those who have been there. Just click any of these green text links. You can read the posts and if you feel inclined even reply but to start a new discussion you have to actually click the 'Join This Group' button.

Macmillan publish a booklet titled 'Understanding Oesophageal (Gullet) Cancer' which you can read to give you an insight on diagnosis and treatments.

There are also other groups which you may find helpful and join after you settle in - Carers Only and Family and Friends Groups - You can find these later by clicking the 'Groups' button underneath where it says cancer information at the top of the page. Just type in the group name and click search.

Do please join and post an intro to the Oesophageal Group they are the best people to help you with any questions regarding advice about treatment.

Take care and best wishes to you and your hubby, George & Jackie (breast group)
