Today is the day for M**’s surgery. M** has to be in the hospital for 07:30 hrs. To ensure we’re not late, I was up at 04:00 hrs, to account for traffic, road works, etc and any parking issues. As it was, traffic wasn’t too bad. Parking was fine.
By the time we got into the hospital, it was 07:00 hrs. We waited outside the ward, with a few other patients for someone to call us in. The 30 minute wait seems to drag, M** is feeling understandably nervous and just wanting to get it over with.
Finally the 30 minute wait is over, it’s now 07:30 hrs, a nurse opens the door and calls us in, explaining its patients only. I give M** a hug and tell her she’s going to be fine, everythings going to be ok, before kissing her goodbye. I make my way home.
At 08:40 hrs, M** calls me to let me know she’s soon going into theatre, as she has spoken to Mr Vakis and 2 of the anaesthetist’s, who introduced themselves and explained what they were going to do. One of the things they were going to do was to perform a spinal block. This would help with recovery, and would mean they could use a lighter dose of anaesthetic. However, as M** has a bulging disc in her back, this might not be an option, meaning they would have to use a heavier dose of anaesthetic.
At 12:11 hrs M** calls me, she’s out of surgery, everything went to plan.
I made my way back to the hospital in the evening, for a quick visit, we were so pleased to see each other.
M** tells me Mr Vakis explained the surgery was successful, he also explained he removed part of M**’s liver. But only a minute piece, as this was close to where the cancer was, nothing to worry about.
