What happens next???

Less than one minute read time.

My Mum has terminal lung cancer and is just starting round 6 of 6 chemos - we have been told that we will have some radiotherapy after that.....but we are scared...then what??? Do we just wait for the cancer to do its worst???

    Hi

It sounds like the chemo has done it's job, and the fact that they are willing and able to do RT is really positive.  Even if it doesn't feel like it at the moment!

I don't know what stage or type of cancer your Mum has, and it's difficult to guess (which is all anyone could do)  how things might go, and anyway, as I'm sure as you already know, everyone is different when it comes to responding to treatment.

This one is really a question for your Mum's Onc and if she isn't seeing him prior to commencing RT, so she can ask, I'd be surprised.

I know that in some circumstances, if the cancer is at a reasonably early stage and has responded well to chemo and RT, surgery might be possible.  But I don't want to give you false hope, because I don't think it happens very often.  However, there are much more knowledgeable and experienced heads on here than mine, and hopefully they can comment on that.

Unfortunately, once you've completed treatment, pretty much everyone is on watch and wait, which is one of the things that makes cancer so difficult to live with.

The reality is, we really do have to take things one stage at a time and not worry about things that 'might' happen, but focus on what's happening now, and so far, believe it or not, everything is sounding positive.

If you're not likely to see your Mum's Onc soon, I'd suggest you get a hold of the specialist nurse that's been allocated to your Mum (you should have her contact details) and speak to her about your concerns.

Good luck with the last of the chemo and the RT, I hope it works really well.

    Hi,

If your mum is responding well thats great the Drs will monitor the situation.

Try not to stress it's a waste of energy and very rarely helps anything.

Enjoy the good result you are experiencing right now and start planning what to do with your time when the treatment doesn't take it all up, after all thats what we do all this for more time.

    Hugs and best wishes
