Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumour (GIST)

Less than one minute read time.

Has anyone in their 70's experienced a GIST in the stomach and had it removed. My wife is currently being assessed for a GIST and would like to know how others have got on during and after removal. Thanks.

  • Hello

I am aware you are a member of the Stomach Cancer group - would a new post on this group be better than a blog, as it's more chance of being seen by those people who may have the same or similar issues.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hi.   I’m in my 60’s and have had 2 GIST removed. One in the stomach and one a few years later in surrounding soft tissue.  All went well and I’m having 3 monthly scans as the last tumour was apparently of a more aggressive nature.  I am not on imatinib yet but will start it if another GIST returns. Which is likely.   So I can’t comment on side effects of treatment yet. I have no symptoms with my GIST when they appear but regular scans mean that things are found early.  Bit of a rollercoaster with scans and waiting for results but slowly getting my head round it all. I wish your wife every best wish.  And all I will say is macmillan are absolutely fabulous. Always someone to call if you want a chat or feel anxious. And a fabulous bunch of people on the forums all going through a tough time but always supporting each other   Sending love to you both

  • Thank you. Op went well and whole stomach removed. Now awaiting biopsy for future pathway. Keep positive.
