I am a divorced fifty-six year old with an estranged family, diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia AML in June 2014. Formerly a successful businessman with many years’ specialist knowledge gained in the mobile financial sector. In late 2013 and early 2014 I noticed that I was almost constantly exhausted, but put the problems down to hectic European and African schedule, which often meant I'd work during the week without proper rest or sleep.
Finally unable to function, I collapsed in my GP’s surgery, and was admitted as an emergency case to Leighton Hospital at Crewe, then rushed to a specialist Cancer Centre at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire. Despite an initial misdiagnosis prior to hospital intensive care, the subsequent treatment, including several idarubicin sessions during initial month-long stay in hospital and in the chemotherapy day unit. Regular bone marrow monitoring has thankfully finished, however long coastal or mountain walks and walking football, now form part of the overall recovery process.
On Friday 8th December 2017 I somewhat nervously attended my local cancer centre having been diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia in July 2014. With some brilliant NHS medical care including rather unpleasant but effective chemotherapy, wonderful friendship help and tremendous Macmillan support, we beat Leukaemia.
Despite a difficult marriage break-up, losing my family and house, much down to the cancer taking its toll, on Friday, I was told my three year remission was complete and was discharged. I'm delighted with news. However, I'm now wanting to return to work and rebuild my life, but I have learned a most valuable lesson. Without your health, you're really of little use to others or yourself. Don't delay in asking for help. Stay healthy.
