Debulk done. Decisions, decisions.

Less than one minute read time.

I had the debulk of my palate above the obturator. Two weeks since the op and I'm recovering well.

The eye surgery has yet to be arranged, but I'm now having second thoughts...

Should I go for the BIG debulk (9+ hour op) which would include the left eye removal but also would take out as much as possible of the cancer throughout my sinuses? This would also require reconstruction of the missing cheek bone, probably using some bone from my thigh.

I'm undecided and will discuss with maxfax surgeon tomorrow, perhaps with follow up discussions with the wider Head & Neck team.

If I go for the major debulk there's a significant risk the left side of my face will need a skin graft (because the cancer is so close to the surface), something that looks quite awful in all the pics I've been shown by the eye surgeon. It's hard to contemplate that outcome  :(  I'm not sure I would want to socialise any more if my face was so disfigured, and that would mean no more choir... I don't know if I would want to continue living if that happens.

Tough times.

Hi Kuala B! Just read your post and you truly are an amazingly strong woman! When I was diagnosed 2 years ago I was a carer for my husband/mother and father! The breast cancer nurses said it was prob the stress that had caused my cancer too! However I'm r e ally struggling at the moment since my husband died in Feb this year! I'm younger than yourself at 52 and everyone keeps telling me it's early days and things will become easier but it's all still a struggle at the moment! Did you have much support after your husband died? I've also battled anxiety + depression for years and this seems at times worse than the actual breast cancer! Any tips on coping strategies would be most welcome! Take care gill x x x

Hi Thomas 255! Sorry about that! My computer skill aren't great! Hopefully posted in right group now! Good luck with discussions today! I always use the "follow your gut" policy when it comes to decisions! I suppose what you really nee to know is how long you have with both options and then the usual quality of life decisions! The thing is we're all so completely different! I can remember a while ago a story about a young rugby player who became paralyzed from the neck down and took himself off to dignitas cos he couldn't cope! Then there's stephen hawking who carries on at all costs and who despite his disabilities has contributed so much to this world!

I suspect what your concerned about most is other people's reactions to your appearance! If I we're a friend it wouldn't bother me at all and I'd just think how incredibly brave and strong you were! Take care and I hope you make the right decision for "you" x x xgill
