Diabetes and Professor Meeting Update

2 minute read time.
Hi All Feel a bit happier this morning - we went to Pauls GP last nite and said his sugar levels are still high so she has given him an extra pill to take a day - also given him stronger sleeping pills and also pills for depression - though I truly dont think he is "depressed" as such - just plain exhausted which is making him cranky and irritable - she said the lack of sleep is not being caused by the diabetes - but due to his mind working overtime etc - etc - so will see what happens with the new meds. Then this morning he had an appointment with his Professor at Westmead - I unfortunately couldnt go due to having to work but his brother Dave took him up and sat with him as they met - the doctor told Paul there is a 50% chance of him coming through this with the chemo - also told him he looked a lot better than he expected him to look and that he seemed to be handling the chemo well!!! Anyway - that has put Paul I think on a bit of a high - I also was given this morning by my boss who has been terrific through all this - a number of a friend of his who is an ex cancer surgeon and has oppened up a clinic for cancer in the city - so spoke to her this morning and she confirmed everything we have been told - but she also said that the sleeplessness is caused by the steroids in the chemo over the course of the three days that he has the treatment and will stay in his blood for up to 4/5 days after end of chemo - also said the high sugar levels are due to the steroids in the chemo - she said she would have thought he would have been put on insulin but that his GP is prob just taking is easy as she wouldnt want it to go the other way - too low sugar levels. So just spoken to Paul on phone and he is having some lunch - sounds a little chirpier - which is good. He has been a little bit distant from the kids - not that they are really noticing - dont think he even saw them this morning - but as people have said to me before - kids bounce back and are very resilient - as long as there is calm in the house and things run as normal as possible they will be fine - Ok - off to have my sandwich - will chat again soon - xxxx
