The cost of cancer – has it impacted you financially?

1 minute read time.

Since our establishment 99 years ago, one of the core principles of Macmillan Cancer Support has been the relief of poverty associated with cancer.

The financial impact of cancer is still a big focus for us today, as many cancer patients and their families are dealing with a huge financial burden as a result of their illness. We’ve found that financial concerns are second only to physical pain as a cause of stress for many people affected by cancer.

However, a lot of people are unaware that they might be entitled to claim statutory benefits, including some that are non-means-tested, and are unsure of how to access the benefits system.

You can get advice about benefits through our helpline (0808 808 00 00, Monday to Friday, 9am to 8pm). Macmillan also has welfare rights services based in some hospitals. These services can help you work out what benefits you might be eligible for, and how to go about applying for them.

This is an important policy issue for us and one that we will continue to campaign on. For example, one of the key messages in our recent consultation response to a new Cancer Service Framework for Northern Ireland, was that all people affected by cancer must be given information about what financial help (including welfare benefits) is available, and how to access that help.

Are you struggling financially as a result of having cancer? Have you checked whether you’re eligible for assistance?
