Matt's Kitchen Diary

1 minute read time.

Matt and I had a lovely chat about his first weeks work...

He likes the job, and enjoys the banter in the kitchen. His boss called him in and said after 3 days he had learned so much more than they expected him too... he has been told at this rate he will be promoted and may get to do more complicated meals. He is currently doing starters, children's meals and sides for mains... he said the children's meals aren't the sort of thing he would feed his kids... all nuggets / burgers and chips...

I think maybe he has been brought up on restaurant quality food at home... all fresh, top quality products cooked carefully and with love... [ his step dad is very creative in the kitchen and I do some of his favourites and puddings]

He thinks he wants to work in a different type of kitchen already... he wants to create recipies not follow them! We bought him the elbulli book that describes creative cookery and models the best restaurant in the world... I came in yesterday and he was on a break, eating his meal reading the book... said he wanted to go there for a meal... inspired perhaps?

He worked out his first week he did 39 hours and will have a pay packet of £141.60 to take home plus tips at the end of the month... a little different to my first pay packet which was £33.33 for a 39 hour week... [1980]

I am so happy he is enjoying things and it is lovely to see him passionate about what he does.

Maybe we will all be eating at his best restaurant in the world one day!

  • Hi Julia & Matt,

That is a heartening story after all he has been through, and one which no doubt makes you very proud.

It reminds me of my first wage packet, when i left school in 1969 all i wanted to be was a chef, until that was i had work experiance in a large seafront hotel kitchen, it was too hot, too smelly, and absolutly frantic, my next posting for 2 weeks was a garage which i didnt think i would like at all, 40 years later im still in the auto industry! my first wage packet for a 42 hour week at age 15 was just £1:17:06 i remember thinking that i used to earn more doing a paper round before and after school.

I am pleased that he has found something he enjoys to do for a living, and wish him the very best of luck with it.

I am suprised he likes the work and hours, he is however loving the banter and team work... and pretty front of house waitresses may have something to do with it.

On his first Sunday shift he worked 12 - finish and he said the kitchen took over 10k.... apparently a nearby pub burned down and they picked up all the extra trade... he said it can only get better!

Wow I thought my first wage was tiny, yours sounds incredible... like you I used to work part time one night a week and earned £9.50....

It is good that you swapped trades so quickly, I think finding something that you enjoy is very important... I love my job and previous jobs working with volunteers in the community. I do training and development work, getting things up and running like activities and groups. I did a stint in senior management and whilst it paid well, I honestly prefer the less pressurised more fulfilling stuff I do now!

Hope this sunshine is delighting you!

    Take care

    Julia
