Andrew's Hospital Blues - T's Day One Million (A.S.)

3 minute read time.

Well it's not quite one million - it just feels like it the amount that's happened. Let me give you all a quick catch up ........

After pumping him with all kinds of antibiotics Saturday morning dawned bright and clear, and joy of joys A was let out for his daughter's wedding, although we thought initially he would be granted "ward leave" for the day they decided that he was well enough to be discharged (yay!) - his son picked him up in the morning really early and they wended their way down to Dorset (I had driven down the night before so I was there bright and early to take the wedding photos). He was tired and thin (he had only just started to take small mouthfuls of food at this point) but he was there and walked her down the aisle. We both took more photos and then went back to the reception. A looked quite drained, so late afternoon we left and headed home - it was a long journey in those torrential rain storms.

Happy to be safely home we sat on the sofa only to notice a light blinking on the answerphone:

"Hello, it's the urology team at the hospital here. We've noticed something else in your blood samples and we need you to come back in straight away for a course of IV antibiotics." A and I looked at each other stunned ....... he rang the hospital .... luckily they said he could wait to go in til Sunday afternoon. We made the most of it, snuggled up in bed, had a lie in and made the most of being together!

All too soon it was time to go back to the hospital. By 5 o'clock A was on his drip being fed two different types of antibiotics to try to beat the background staphylococcus infection they had detected. With no beds available on the main wards he found himself in a private room at the end - or maybe we have now notched up enough NHS 'air miles' that we have been upgraded to club class! ;-)

The doctors were determined to find out where the stubborn bugs were hiding - were they in a heart valve, some other organ? Monday & Tuesday A had heart echos, numerous microbiology tests and was prodded and poked by a variety of doctors and medical teams - there were ultrasounds and x-rays and they were all clear. He was feeling completely better by Monday so was starting to get a little stir crazy, just crossing his fingers that he would be allowed home Wednesday night.

Then miraculously yesterday morning I had a text telling me he was signed off, allowed out and he'd by coming home by lunchtime. He got changed, packed all his stuff and then ............... the doctor came back and told him that unfortunately the micro biology team would prefer if he had a full seven day course of IV antibiotics before he left, so he'd be in for another four days. He was totally crestfallen! My poor A.

Last night found us cuddled up together in the middle of the very tiny hospital bed til the end of visiting time. I miss him terribly and cannot wait for him to get out!!  We are booked in for a big dinner dance with lots of our friends on Saturday night and I am hoping he will get special dispensation for being a good boy and will be allowed out in time, as technically he shouldn't leave til Sunday lunchtime. I'll find out later. FIngers crossed Macmillanland. Absence certainly makes the heart grow fonder, and I will be planning a kidnapping if they say no!

Take care

Aww poor A - delighted he made the wedding though it would have been a tradedy had he missed it. Wishing him well soon, sending love to you both Jools xxxx

  • Awwww! Poor Andrew... Poor Tgirl. It was good to hear he managed to walk his daughter down the aisle. Those special days are so important and I'm sure it boosted his morale.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for 'The Great Escape' on Saturday!

    Best wishes,

Hi T, this one reads like a bad dream, it's like someone showing you a lollipop and then telling you you cant have it yet. I bet Andrews patience is wearing a bit thin by now. It would make a Saint swear !!!.  His next blog will be full of 'deleted expletives' Lol.

Best wishes to you both, Bill xxxx

Here's hoping they let him out (good that they found out what kind of in fection though). I've had a couple of those "You're going home! no you're not" moments and 'crestfallen' is the word :) It's like telling a child that xmas is cancelled.

Really pleased you both made the wedding - hope the photos turned out :)

    Love to you both

What a rotten old time you're both having. Thank goodness he made it to his daughter's wedding. At least they've found the nasty bugs that are making him so unwell and even though it's a bummer that he has to stay for another few days, he should be a fully functioning Andrew by the time they let him out. Please send my best wishes and tell him that I look forward to hearing about his ordeal in full magical techicolour!
